Discovering Armstrong County: A Journey Through Local History

Step back in time and explore the rich and diverse history of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania in this engaging personal enrichment series.  Discovering Armstrong County invites history enthusiasts, lifelong learners, and local residents to uncover the people, places, and events that have shaped the region—from its earliest Native American roots to modern-day communities.

This special series is being offered in coordination with America's 250th birthday, providing a unique opportunity to celebrate the nation’s milestone by exploring Armstrong County’s pivotal role in the country’s early history.

Through interactive discussions, guest speakers, historical artifacts, and optional site visits, participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the county’s cultural heritage, industrial growth, and lasting traditions.

Kittanning: Early Settlements & Revolutionary Roots

Location: Armstrong County Historical & Genealogical Society (300 N. McKean St., Kittanning, PA)
Capacity: 30 participants

Begin the series in Kittanning, the county seat rich in early American history.  This session explores Native American settlements, the French & Indian War, and Armstrong County's role in the Revolutionary War.

Participants will:

  • Tour second-floor museum exhibits, including a handwritten letter from George Washington;
  • Visit the historic Rupp Log Cabin on site;
  • View and discuss the commemorative 250th Bell at the Museum.

Dayton: Small Town Stories & the Underground Railroad

Location: The Marshall House (107 N. State St., Dayton, PA)
Capacity: 30 participants

Discover the history of Dayton through the lens of the Marshall family and 19th-centery life.  Local volunteers will share stories and artifacts that bring the era to life.

Highlights include:

  • A guided look inside the historic Marshall House;
  • Exploration of family memorabilia from the 1800s;
  • Discussion of a nearby Marshall home that served as a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Ford City: Civil War Stories Among the Stones

Location: Appleby Manor Presbyterian Church (810 Main St., Ford City, PA)
Capacity: 20 participants

Led by Katie Wolfe, Program Coordinator from Ford City Public Library, this session focuses on Armstrong's role in the Civil War.  In the event of inclement weather, the program will be rescheduled for May 20, 2026 at 6:00 PM, as a portion of the program is planned to take place outdoors.

This experience includes:

  • An engaging presentation in the church hall;
  • A guided walk through the cemetery, visiting 12 gravesites highlighting Armstrong County's role in the Civil War (appropriate footwear is necessary for hilly & uneven locations in the cemetery);
  • Stories of Civil War Soldiers and residents told at their gravesites.

Apollo: Notable Lives & Lasting Legends

Location: Apollo Historical Society (317 N. Second St., Apollo, PA)

Explore Apollo's rich local history and its connection to nationally recognized figures.

Participants will learn about:

  • The lives and legacies of Nellie Bly and General Jackson;
  • How their stories intersect with broader American history;
  • A famous Hollywood actor descended from General Jackson;
  • Optional short walk to the historic Drake Cabin.

Registration & Pricing

  • $10 per individual class
  • $30 for the full 4-class series

All proceeds are donated to the host venues in support of local historical preservation efforts.  The registation portal below adds a suggested donation, which you can opt out of at checkout.
